On two consecutive days in June 1963, in two lyrical speeches, John F. Kennedy pivots dramatically and boldly on the two greatest issues of his time: nuclear arms and civil rights. In language unheard in lily white, Cold War America, he appeals to Americans to see both the Russians and the "Negroes" as human beings. His speech on June 10 leads to the Limited Nuclear Test Ban Treaty of 1963; his speech on June 11 to the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Based on new material -- hours of recently uncovered documentary film shot in the White House and the Justice Department, fresh interviews, and a rediscovered draft speech -- Two Days in June captures Kennedy at the high noon of his presidency in startling, granular detail which biographer Sally Bedell Smith calls "a seamless and riveting narrative, beautifully written, weaving together the consequential and the quotidian, with verve and authority." Moment by moment, JFK's feverish forty-eight hours unspools in cinematic clarity as he addresses "peace and freedom." In the tick-tock of the American presidency, we see Kennedy facing down George Wallace over the integration of the University of Alabama, talking obsessively about sex and politics at a dinner party in Georgetown, recoiling at a newspaper photograph of a burning monk in Saigon, planning a secret diplomatic mission to Indonesia, and reeling from the midnight murder of Medgar Evers. There were 1,036 days in the presidency of John F. Kennedy. This is the story of two of them.

For those who were of age in 1963 Two Days in June by Andre Cohen is a chance to revisit those historic two days in which President Kennedy accomplished his proudest achievement with the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty with Russia on June 10th with his speech at American University and on June 11th with his speech on Civil Rights. To me the most interesting part of the book was when he addressed the nation on television regarding equal rights for Negroes, as they were referred to at the time because I remember it vividly. President Kennedy had about two minutes to review the speech prior to going on the air as his speechwriter Ted Sorensen wrote frantically while his typist pounded out the draft that the President was to read to the nation. What makes it more poignant today is that voting and other rights are once again under attack for minorities. While the President was being praised for his speech a Southern bigot, whose name will not be dignified here, lay in wait for Civil Rights activist Medgar Evers to return home from a meeting and murdered him with a rifle shot while he got out of his car in his driveway. In addition to President Kennedy I feel speechwriter Ted Sorensen is a hero of sorts as he drew upon his experience of a paper he wrote in a Nebraska high school for thoughts to include in the Civil Rights speech. Martin Luther King was thrilled with the speech while Southern Democrats were livid with who they always referred to as "the Kennedys." The assassination of Medgar Evers was previews of coming attractions with the assassination of President Kennedy, brother Robert, Martin Luther King, and others in the violent 1960s.The book is thoroughly researched and if you lived through this period of our history you will find it to be history revisited for you.
